How to Add a Payment Method to Meta for WhatsApp
This article explains how to add a payment method to your Meta Business Account for WhatsApp usage.
To send WhatsApp messages through the WhatsApp Business API, Meta requires a valid payment method on file. This covers the cost of conversation-based charges (such as utility and marketing messages). Without a payment method, your messaging may be paused or limited.
Before you start you'll need:
- Admin access to the Meta Business Manager account that owns your WhatsApp Business Account (WABA)
- A valid payment method: credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), or PayPal depending on your region
- Billing permissions on the Meta Business Account (the Finance Editor or Admin role)
Note: Payment methods for WhatsApp are managed at the Meta Business Account level, not the WhatsApp Business Account level. Make sure you're in the right place.
Step 1: Open Meta Business Settings
- Go to business.facebook.com and log in.
- Click the Settings icon (gear) in the bottom-left corner.
- This opens Business Settings.
Step 2: Navigate to Payment Methods
- In the left-hand menu, scroll down to the Payments section.
- Click Payment Methods.
- You'll see any existing payment methods listed here, along with the option to add a new one.
Step 3: Add a new payment method
- Click Add Payment Method.
- Select your payment type — typically Credit or Debit Card.
- Enter your card details:
- Card number
- Expiry date
- CVV / security code
- Billing name and address
- Click Save or Continue to confirm.
Meta may perform a small temporary authorisation charge to verify the card — this is standard and will be reversed.
Tip: Use a card that won't expire soon and is not subject to transaction limits that could block international charges from Meta (Ireland-based entity for EU businesses).
Step 4: Set as primary payment method (if needed)
If you have multiple payment methods on file, make sure the correct one is set as primary:
- In the Payment Methods screen, locate the card you want to use.
- Click the three-dot menu (⋮) next to it.
- Select Set as Primary.
The primary payment method is the one Meta will charge for WhatsApp conversation fees.
Step 5: Link the payment method to your WhatsApp Business Account
In some cases, you may need to explicitly associate the payment method with your WhatsApp Business Account:
- From Business Settings, go to Accounts → WhatsApp Accounts.
- Select your WhatsApp Business Account.
- Click Settings, then look for the Billing & Payments section.
- Confirm that the correct payment method is associated.
If you manage multiple WhatsApp Business Accounts under one Meta Business Account, each may have its own billing configuration.
Step 6: Verify billing is active
Once a payment method is added, you can confirm it's working by checking your billing status:
- Go to Business Settings → Payments → Billing.
- You should see your account status as Active with the linked payment method shown.
- Any outstanding balance or billing threshold information will also appear here.
Common issues
I don't see a Payments section in Business Settings. You may not have the Finance Editor or Admin role on the Meta Business Account. Ask your account admin to update your permissions under Business Settings → Users → People.
My card is being declined. Check with your bank that international transactions are allowed — Meta bills from Ireland (for EU accounts). Also ensure the card hasn't hit a spending limit or that 3D Secure authentication isn't blocking the transaction.
I added a payment method but messaging is still paused. There may be an outstanding balance or a compliance issue on the account. Check Payments → Billing for any unpaid invoices and settle them. If the issue persists, contact Meta Support through WhatsApp Manager.
I can't find the WhatsApp billing section. Not all accounts surface a separate WhatsApp billing tab. In that case, the payment method set at the Meta Business Account level (Step 2–3) will apply to all assets including WhatsApp, and no further linking step is needed.
